Queen Blossom ran a strong 2nd in the CTT and TOC Stakes at Del Mar.
This race had 3 scratches, and ended up running as a field of 4. Sometimes these small fields become a jockeys race of cat and mouse. Unfortunately in this race, I think we were the mouse. Queen Blossom broke well, and settled into 3rd early, only a length or so off the lead. She maintained this position until the far turn, when she challenged for the lead. Unfortunately this caused her to go 3-4 wide in a 4 horse field. Queen Blossom is a leggy filly who has a long stride. The tight turns at Del Mar are always going to be tougher for her to gain ground on, especially if she is swung wide. Once she got into the straight she pulled away from the 3rd and 4th place finishers, but couldn’t hold off the winner.
It was a little disappointing not to win, but I think Queen Blossom ran well, and came out of the race well. The winner is a horse that I think is on the improve, and has always shown a lot of ability. She ran 4th in the G1 Kentucky Oaks last year.
At this point we are looking at the G1 Rodeo Drive for Queen Blossom’s next start. There is also a distance race at KY Downs, that is a possibility for her
